Gli obiettivi aziendali di qualunque natura essi siano, sia commerciali o di produzione o di investimenti, non possono essere in alcun modo stabiliti senza prima aver esplicitato il concetto di visione e missione dell’azienda.

La vision che ciascun imprenditore dovrebbe avere è la capacità di prevedere il futuro in termini di bisogni dei clienti relativamente al settore in cui opera la propria azienda, di anticipare l’evoluzione dei trend tecnologici, di comprendere la direzione in cui il mercato si svilupperà e di prevedere variazioni dello scenario globale in cui l’impresa opera.

È opportuno portare alcuni esempi che si sono rilevati quanto mai appropriati per meglio comprendere il concetto di vision , in quanto hanno avuto la capacità di segnare con anticipo la strada che il mercato dei prodotti e dei servizi informatici avrebbe perseguito. Nel 1980 una nota azienda produttrice di computer ha fissato la propria vision nella frase: “un computer in ogni abitazione e in ogni ufficio ”.

La mission, invece, deve indicare quale cammino l’impresa deve intraprendere per arrivare al futuro indicato dalla vision precedentemente formulata . Il compito principale del management sarà pertanto quello di strutturare nel modo più opportuno risorse (sia economico-finanziarie che umane che di qualunque altro genere) organizzazione e processi, in modo che queste tre leve agiscano nel modo opportuno ai fini del raggiungimento degli obiettivi indicati dalla mission .

Pertanto diventa intuitivo comprendere che alla vision che qualunque imprenditore ha per il futuro della propria azienda – cioè il modo in cui il titolare vede lo sviluppo futuro sia della propria attività che dei mercati e dell’ambiente in cui la stessa opera – deve corrispondere una mission specifica.

Viste quindi come un tutt’uno è in un certo senso la meta finale e il modo per raggiungere tale meta, vision e mission riescono a fornire un senso di direzione dell’azienda , trasmettono il senso della scoperta e di sfida, motivano persone e organizzazione nel raggiungimento di un fine specifico orientando nel modo più opportuno la cultura aziendale.
