With a diameter of 55 thousand light years, M33 is the smallest of the three main galaxies forming the Local Group , the other two are the giant Andromeda e Milky Way.
Also known as Triangulum Galaxy, M31 to contend, to which, inter alia, gravitationally bound, the title of farthest object in the sky visible to the naked eye . According to recent studies, sua distanza dalla nostra Galassia sarebbe stimabile in circa 3 milioni di anni luce ed al suo interno presenterebbe la più estesa nebulosa ad emissione dell’ intero Gruppo Locale , ben identificabile nella foto poiché corrispondente alla più grande delle “macchie” rosso-arancio visibili nella spirale più periferica. Tale regione, con i suoi 1500 anni luce di diametro, risulta essere decine di volte più luminosa ed estesa della grande Nebulosa di Orione .
Tecnicamente M33 è, come M31, una galassia a spirale semplice di tipo A, ma con la particolarità di possedere le polveri ed i gas costituenti the spiral arms, local collapse in aggregate and therefore not distributed evenly. This feature gives the body a particular aspect of galactic called "spiral flaky."
